
Even if you are on the most current version of Sage 100, your actual software environment may still be running out of time. ERP applications still need to be hosted on a server somewhere to be used, whether on-premise locally in equipment you keep onsite or offsite through the cloud or a remote protocol connection. However, your solution will still live in someone’s hardware in either case and that hardware will eventually age out.
With another major Windows Server EOL (end of life) approaching for Windows Server 2016 in January 2027, now is as good a time as any to consider your options for where your Sage 100 software will reside and whether it is time to work with a cloud service provider (CSP) that brings the experience you need to streamline your persistent Sage ERP pain points:
The Clock Running Out on Your Server Life
A hosted software application still has to live in a server somewhere – the major difference is that someone else takes on the maintenance and other headaches associated with the upkeep on the physical hardware itself. However, that also means that some of the core requirements for maintaining the system still remain, such as security and technical updates. Even when hosting Sage 100 in the cloud, you will still need to upgrade your version to the latest release to continue receiving support for the software itself.
This factor also applies to the server environment as well, as these also age out into a legacy stage and become outdated platforms that will eventually stop being supported by the vendor, e.g., Microsoft with Windows Server 2016. This also applies to operating systems like Windows 10 and any other digitized architecture pieces that make your applications and networks work. The good news is that there are many CSPs who can handle all of these requirements as well – the bad news is that not all can, or would if were able to.
The Challenge for Midmarket Companies on Sage 100
For mid-sized companies on Sage 100, this issue becomes a much heavier, and often unexpected lift. While small businesses will typically only have a few users in accounting or operations teams on the ERP simultaneously, at the midmarket it is more likely a complex stack of multiple integrated applications across more than one type of environment and managed by dozens of users in otherwise siloed departments, with overlapping operational timelines. A major software migration will be painful, to say the least, for many of the activities that rely on your solution as the primary system of record, automation accelerator or any other number of foundational purposes.
What will inevitably make this worse is if whoever is in charge of hosting has absolutely no experience managing your specific software. Sage 100 is an older solution that often is connected to multiple integrations to create a 360-degree financial and business management ecosystem, making a typical deployment a complex web of software and middleware that requires knowing the ins and outs of every piece to avoid breaking anything at the wrong time. Handing it off to an IT team or cloud service that is not familiar with these factors means that whenever a fundamental problem occurs, you will still have to search for an external expert to help solve the issue or lose considerable time trying to figure it out internally through trial and error.
Sage 100 is Not a Generic Workload for the Cloud
Sage 100 is a typically client/server application running on either a ProvideX or a Microsoft SQL Server database depending on your edition and users on the cloud typically reach it through a remote desktop session rather than a browser tab the way a true SaaS product would. For that arrangement to perform, the application and its database generally want to sit together on the same server – drop them onto a stock virtual machine tuned for web traffic and you can end up with an environment that either crawls or that Sage will not support at all, such as Azure Virtual Desktop or Remote Desktop Web Client.
That remote-session model carries its own quirks, too. Because your users are working inside a hosted desktop instead of on their own machines, everyday things like printing and peripheral access come down entirely to how the environment was stood up – Sage has documented cases where a printer simply will not appear in Sage 100 because it was never installed on the hosting server for that user’s profile.

The flip side is that the right partner turns most of those risks into things you no longer have to think about. A CSP that already knows Sage 100 is not learning your environment on your dime – moving to their cloud does not change the software itself, so your customizations, your data structures and the workflows your team already knows stay exactly as they are, only now running somewhere built to hold them. You are relocating your ERP, not re-implementing it, and the gap between those two experiences comes down almost entirely to whether the people doing the work have done it before with your particular software.

- Third-Party Integration Coordination: A typical Sage 100 deployment connects to add-ons and outside applications built specifically for the ERP, including shipping, EDI, sales tax, payment processing, warehouse management and payroll systems. Each of these has its own compatibility, version and support requirements, and a hosting partner that recognizes them can pull in the right vendor when an issue crosses application boundaries.

Verifying that these still return the same results at the same performance level is not something a general infrastructure team will do without being asked.
