Take a Preventative Approach to Cybersecurity

September 5, 2024 by Collin Knauer

Home » Cybersecurity » Take a Preventative Approach to Cybersecurity

Cybersecurity threats are evolving and becoming increasingly sophisticated, so businesses need to evolve with them. This can happen in various ways—by investing in new technologies or learning new strategies—but one of the most crucial shifts businesses need to make is a mental one. How you view your cyber defense strategy can be just as important as the tools you use. Experts suggest that the most effective approach to cybersecurity today is a preventative one, so here are a few reasons to why your organization should consider adopting this approach.

What is a Preventative Approach?

A preventative approach to cybersecurity focuses on strengthening your network against potential attacks before they can occur, not after. This differs from a remediation-based strategy, which aims to detect and contain threats once they have already infiltrated the network. While remediation is an essential component of a broader cybersecurity plan, a preventative approach emphasizes stopping cyber threats before they can even enter your network. This strategy also requires ongoing visibility into both your internal systems and any third-party infrastructures that interact with your organization. So, your internal IT team and any external protection software need to be on the same page, for example. By maintaining this visibility, your business can quickly identify emerging threats and address vulnerabilities before they can be exploited.

It is important to note that a preventative approach does not mean completely ignoring remediation; rather, it shifts the primary focus to proactive defense. Essentially, if you prevent hackers from breaching your network in the first place, you will not have to worry about mitigating their attacks.

Another common mindset some organizations possess is the “presume breach” approach, which assumes that a cyber breach is inevitable. While you should always prepare for any scenario, this can lead to complacency and less proactive defense measures. Why invest in security if you are convinced it will not work? A prevention-first mindset, on the other hand, might be more effective at countering sophisticated cyberattacks by focusing on keeping hackers out altogether.

Benefits of a Preventative Approach to Cybersecurity

Investing in a preventative cybersecurity strategy can yield long-term benefits, both financially and operationally.

Prevention is more cost-effective in the long run because the cost of dealing with a successful breach—legal fees, data recovery, customer loss, and reputational damage—can be devastating. By focusing on prevention, you avoid these costly outcomes. When attackers are stopped before they can enter your network, they have no chance to steal sensitive data or cause damage. This approach minimizes risk and ensures that your business continues operating smoothly.

A prevention-based strategy also allows your organization to focus on improving its defenses without requiring highly specialized cybersecurity expertise. In an industry where there’s a global shortage of cybersecurity professionals, prevention allows companies to enhance their defenses without relying heavily on hard-to-find talent.

How to Change Your Mindset

To adopt a prevention-first approach, businesses need to integrate security into their overall culture. Cybersecurity should involve every employee, from the executive team down to entry-level workers. Creating a culture of security ensures that everyone in the organization understands their role in safeguarding data and systems. Businesses should also begin to see cyber defense as an investment, not just an operational expense. Viewing it as a critical, long-term investment will help allocate resources toward building stronger defenses. Focusing on preventing threats from ever entering your network is a more sustainable approach, helping to create a more secure environment.
